The name “Elim” comes from the book of Exodus where the Israelites, leaving the bondage of Egypt under the leadership of Moses, found an oasis called Elim. This represented a place of physical and spiritual refreshing for a weary people.
“Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees; so they camped there by the waters.”
—Exodus 15:27
The Elim Pentecostal Church was founded in 1915 by Welsh revivalist George Jeffreys. Between 1915 and 1934 Jeffreys conducted evangelistic missions throughout the UK. This unknown preacher would begin a mission with a handful of people. By the end of the week thousands would clamour for a seat. Miracles of healing took place. After the mission very large churches were established.
In 1931 the Elim Pentecostal Church Huddersfield was formed when Jeffreys visited the town with a message of salvation and a demonstration of the Holy Spirit’s presence. The Huddersfield Church has expanded into a large international congregation of all ages.
Elim Church Holme Valley grew out of Elim Pentecostal Church Huddersfield in 2004 as a church plant. We are a small but growing congregation, welcoming people from across the Holme Valley. Staying true to our Pentecostal roots, our worship is warm, lively, and informal.
